I liked this, Marzee Doats. You've done a really good job of making a scene that we've seen before (some of us more times than we'd like to admit!) seem fresh and new by setting it in Johnston's point of view and expanding it.
This was so cute, Marzee. I thought you had a good handle on Johnston's voice. His reaction to Jake snorting got me tickled. And who else could better tell Jake a few hard truths? Thanks for a fun bedtime story. :)
Very nice!
I really enjoyed this piece, Marzee, and am glad you decided to post it here. I love how you decided to write it in first person, present tense, and how you gave us this glimpse into Johnston's mind. He certainly has an interesting character voice and I think you got it just right.
It was really interesting to see this moment between him and Jake, from his perspective. It seems like a small moment in time, compared to the other things that happened to them, even that day, but it also seems significant, in a way, for this father/son relationship. I liked Johnston's thoughts about his relationships with his sons and how this wasn't normally his role, but he is at a point where he is ready to try to offer this opinion and advice to his son. And I love his surprise at how Jake takes this advice. I think this was one of my favourite lines:
"But, you're right," he sighs. "I should've - I should've done something." I'm right? Will wonders never cease!
It made me laugh, but it's also telling of where they are at this moment in their relationship.
Thanks for sharing this unique piece with us!
