Little Jakes...Awwwww! I think it would be poetic if he did only have girls and one was just like him.

Yeah, love this fic bunches and bunches.

Who'd have thunk it Hawkin's a Jake/Heather shipper, but I can see it happening that way.

Great story I hope she opens up soon the suspense is killing me.

I didn't really intend to write Hawkins as a 'matchmaker' but I am having alot of fun with it. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. Heather will be opening up soon. You won't have to wait too much longer. Thanks for the review!

OH! wow! This is a wonderful story.

Favorite part is...

(The truth of the dream's meaning in his subconscious jolted Jake awake. It took another minute for the dream's message to seep into his conscious being.

Once awake, Jake couldn't go back to sleep. His mind was occupied with thoughts of his relationship with Emily. His heart, on the other hand, was full of feelings for Heather.

Jake knew he had to deal with the thoughts in his mind before turning attention to the feelings in his heart.

Tonight, he finally admitted that his relationship with Emily was over. He wasn't able to give her what she wanted, what she seemed to need. She wanted the old Jake back . . . she wanted the same relationship they had before Chris died. She was living in the past while he was looking towards the future. )

Yes, Jake, look to the future! Yipee.

Headed to read more.

Sid

Author's Response:

I'm glad that you're enjoying my story! I really enjoy getting into the character's mind, trying to figure out how they would deal with certain situations. I think that while Jake realized he had feelings for Heather, he couldn't pursue them until he ended his realtionship with Emily. I also think that he realized that with Emily, he'd always being living in the past -being someone he no longer was - and that he needed to look toward the future. Thanks for the review.

Another excellent chapter Skyrose!

I love how you always intertwine scenes that have such specific personal development for characters with scenes that show us things that have implications for the bigger picture.

I liked the development of Heather's character here as she prepared to take a big step forward in her relationship with Jake. I have to say I really liked the exchange she had with Olga. It's nice to see a friendly face in Cheyenne, reinforcing that although it's a dangerous place where the people responsible for so many deaths are still in power, it's also a city populated with many people who haven't lost their humanity.

Chavez's trip to the farm was very intriguing. Kind of creepy, in a way. You've captured very well, I think, the atmosphere of a place where everyone is overly enthusiastic on the surface, so much so that I can't help but feel an undercurrent of uneasiness.

I really liked the showdown between Eric and Gray. Eric is so in character- true to his convictions, trying so hard to fill his father's shoes and protect the town, and finding it just out of his control. I feel for Gray, just a little bit. I think he really believes he's doing the best he can, and is completely lost. Too bad he had to accept defeat instead of asking for help earlier.

I enjoyed reading this, and can't wait to see what happens next!

Author's Response:

Penny,

Thanks for your review!

Heather is ready and really wants to take this next step with Jake. Despite this she sees her challenge as convincing Jake that this is what she wants. The only way she sees to do this is to take the initiative and she is a little nervous about this. Olga provides her the support and encouragement she needs to carry through on her plans. I like your take on Cheyenne that while it's a dangerous place where the people responsible for the attacks are in power, there are still people in the city who haven't lost their humanity.

You are right that the farm is creepy and you should be uneasy. All the enthusiasm you see on the surface of thinks hides the more seamier things going on at the farm which you'll find out about as Chavez proceeds with his investigation.

Eric is trying to fill his father's shoes and watch out for the town. I think that he showed some growth, maybe step out of his father's (and Jake's) shadow a little bit, in Season 2 and I tried to capture his growth in his dealings with Gray in this chapter. I do think that Gray is doing the best he can for the town, but on the other hand I think that if he can he's going to make sure he's going to be taken care of in the process. Sometimes, this logic, as it does here backfires on him.

Thanks again for the review!

What an interesting installment!  Things really seem to be gaining momentum (not that this story has ever been slow... it's been just right!)  and I can't wait to see what's coming.  Of course I have very good idea what's coming in a few hours. :-D

I really enjoyed how you wrote Heather's shopping trip and am very glad she ran into Olga, who seems to almost serve as a fairy godmother.  I do feel bad for Olga, though, stuck selling lingerie to the likes of Tara.  I cringe, too, at the thought of Tara "entertaining" Valente!

Heather's shopping trip kind of lulled me into a false sense of security, but that soon started to wear off thanks to the "off-ness" of Chavez's visit to the too-perfect farm, with the too-perfect family.  I fear for the Johnsons.  I do hope that Chavez checks on them again, or I worry they will be "disappeared".  I was also a little saddened over Jones' obviously bad opinion of the refugees/Feemies, but I suppose it is inevitable in the dog eat dog world they're living in.

The scene with Eric and Gray was great too.  Gray's chickens really do seem to be coming home to roost and he's certainly not getting even half of what he deserves.  He sells the farmers out for mere trinkets to people he doesn't trust within a mile of his salt mine!  Talk about a double standard.  I'm glad Eric's standing up to him.  And I loved this ending:

"You want me to help you out? You have got to be kidding me!"

"I don't know where else to turn. You're the only lawyer left in town!" Gray pleaded, his concern for his problem overriding the frustration the he felt for having to depend on a Green to solve his problem.

The corners of Eric's lips curled upward, but his smile did not reach his eyes.  The effect sent a cold chill down Gray's spine

"No way in hell. Lots of luck, you're going to need it," Eric said derisively before storming out of the office.

All I can say is "Go Eric!" If Gray's frustrated having to ask a Green for help I wonder how he'll feel if the Jennings and Rall steals his mine!  And I for one can't wait to see how this turns out.

Thanks for sharing!

Author's Response:

Marzee,

I'm glad the pace of the story is working for you since I did have some concerns that the story was moving a little too slow. Dare I say, that you are right about what you expect to be happening in just a few hours?

I think you are right that Olga is like a fairy godmother to Heather. On the other hand, Heather is like a breath of fresh air to Olga. It's not too often that someone from Heather comes into the shop, the majority of her customers are very much like Tara. For Heather, I cringe too when I think of Tara and Valente together. I really like Olga and am trying to figure out a way to work her into a subsequent chapter.

You are right the farm is a little too good to be true. The 'all too perfect family' is meant to disguise the seamier things that are going on at the farm but more on that later.

While at some level I think Gray wants to his best by the town, his wants and needs come before his position as mayor. It's the reason why he made the deal with RJ Land and why he's asking for Eric's help now that RJ Land is coercing him into buying services for the salt mine. I saw a little growth in Eric in Season 2 and was trying to highlight this growth by having him stand up to Chavez.

I really enjoyed your review. Thank you!

Oh, I love this story so much, Skyrose!  I'm always amazed at how you are able to juggle different storylines that complement each other and intersect.  There's so much going on in this portion of the chapter!

I loved the scene with Heather and Olga.  I thought it was telling that Olga could see that Heather is classy (what a contrast to Tara who uses her sexuality to advance her career!).  The interaction between them was very cute.  I enjoyed seeing Olga offer Heather encouragement. I think Jake is going to be in for a nice surprise! I can hardly wait for them to meet up again later in the day.

The scene with Chavez going to the farms really unnerved me.  The Cheyenne farms look to be slavery in disguise.  The fact that Jones is putting on a show for Chavez with this so-called perfect family in their perfect house with their perfect accessories and perfect children reminds me of the old adage that if something looks too good to be true, it usually is.  Collins certainly acknowledged the tour was a farce.  Through this all, I kept wondering how much Tomarchio knows of what is actually happening in his “country.”  Is Tomarchio an ineffectual figurehead being maneuvered like a marionette puppet?  Or is he aware of these less than honest (at the best) and evil (at the worst) things going on around him?

Grrrr at Gray.  It was good to see Eric take him to task.  It was good to see Gray squirm.  I just hate that others are going to suffer from his greed and incompetence.

Fantastic job, as always!

Author's Response:

SandraDee,

Thanks for the great compliment! I am glad to hear that the different storylines complement each other. I find this one of the challenges with writing this story so I'm glad to hear it's working.

I had alot of fun writing Olga, I think Heather needed a woman to interact with that saw her for what she was, was sympathetic to what she was going through and would give her the encouragement she needed. I think you can look forward to seeing Olga again in a subsequent chapter. You are right, Jake is going to be in for a nice surprise!

The scene where Chavez visited the farm was met to unnerve you. The image that Cheyenne Farm presents to the outside world is definitely too good to be true. The implication that the farm look to slavery in disguise is accurate but they way it all plays out remains to be seen as your questions abot Tomarchio.

Gray should be squirming, he made a big mistake - one that will come back at him. I did enjoy writing a slightly different - more assertive Eric. With Jake done there someone has to keep Gray in line!

Thanks for your review!

Great chapter! I really like your characterizations, and how you let them grow and develop here.

Jake: I really like this side of him we get to see in your story- the Jake who takes care of other people. We certainly see him doing it a lot on the show, in a big way, but you have also shown us this more day-to-day expression of this side of him. I like your description of Heather through his eyes, and how he realizes the value in the way she sees the world. I like the information we get about his family and his childhood as he chooses the picnic spot, and the effort he goes to to set up the night.

 Hawkins: I also really like the side of Hawkins we get to see here. On the one hand, he's business as usual, dedicated to the job. On the other, it's like he's using his talents and people reading skills and insights to sort of play around with the situation, and comment on it. I love the dynamic you've captured between him and Jake- they're so funny teasing each other, but also, developing a sense of respect and comraderie as they work as a team.

 Chavez: I liked getting more backstory for him here. He's totally your own creation, with his grief over his family weighing on him and memories of his father, but he also fits well with the character we saw on the show, I think. Goetz's reaction to him was so...Goetz!

Gray and Eric: I really felt the tension as the Gray vs Green conflict bubbled up to the surface here. Gray...on the one hand, I end up feeling sorry for him, because he knows he's messed up and as misguided as he may be, I think he wants to take care of the town. Then he has to go making deals and getting SUVs, just when he has my sympathy! It was good to see Eric standing his ground here- maintaining a voice of reason, of questions, in the town. And, I have to mention, I loved getting this little scene to check back in with the town.

I liked the description in all the scenes, especially the opening one. You captured that early morning feeling perfectly!

Author's Response:

Thanks for your review, Penny!

Jake: I think it's only natural that Jakes caring for people that we see on the show extends to the day-to-day with the people he cares for. After his conversation with Heather he does realize the value in the way whe sees the world. I think it's Heather's veiw of the world and her appreciation of the simpler things of life grounds Jake in a way that he's never experienced and gives him hope for the future.

Hawkins: I am really enjoying writing the dynamic between Hawkins and Jake. I think there's alot more to Hawkins than what we saw on the show especially as it relates to his feeling about his family. Jake and Hawkins do respect each other and appreciate what the other brings to the table.

Chavez: Joe is alot of fun to write. I am glad to hear that the way I'm writing it fits in well with the character we saw on the show. I am enjoying writing a character that we know very little about from the show. It gives me chance to give him the personality and backstory that I want to which is alot of fun.

Gray and Eric: While I agree with you on some level that Gray wants to do right by the town I think he cares for himself a little bit more, hence, the deal he made on the side with RJ Land. I saw a slighthly different Eric in the 2nd season than in the first season and tried to capture it in this chapter. He is more assertive now and with Jake off in Cheyenne he has to be play a bigger role in keeping Jake in check.

Lovely, skyrose!

 I love where this is going, and am really enjoying the romance of it all. :-)  Heather's shopping list was wonderful, and it's good that she's opening up in how she expresses her affection for Jake.

Hawkins, the perpetual matchmaker is too funny. Love that he gave Jake wine and wineglasses.  He's a good friend to arrange for Jake to be able to tell Gail his news the next day.

I'm really looking forward to that proposal scene!  Thanks for sharing.

Author's Response:

Thanks Marzee!

After all Heather's been through it was a big step to open up to Jake and be honest about her feelings. Not that she the little expressions of affection, such as the the little notes on the shopping list are easy. You can look for more romance in subsequent parts of this chapter.

Hawkins realizes how good Heather is for Jake (and vice versa) that he's willing to do all he can to get them together. I think that Hawkins has some trouble expresses his feelins and I think giving him the wine and arranging the phone call home the next day were gestures of the friendship he feels for Jake that he can't express.

I'm glad you enjoyed this part of Chapter 12.

Sigh.  There's so much to love about this story, Skyrose!  I thoroughly enjoy how you manage to weave so many storylines.

The Jake/Heather scene with Jake fixing Heather cinnamon toast for breakfast was just adorable.  It just goes to show that loving someone isn't all about grand gestures 24/7. Sometimes the simplest gestures--like Jake fixing Heather breakfast--can speak volumes.  I also thought the teasing between them about Jake being a kept man were so cute.

It also sounds as though Jake is cooking up one fantastic proposal for Heather.  I'm really looking forward to the two of them making it official.  I think we all know what Heather's answer will be when he finally pops the question!

Hawkins and Jake make a really nice team.  I always enjoyed their interaction on the show, and I'm so glad that Hawkins is an integral part of this story.  So many people (myself included) get stymmied when it comes to writing his character, but you do a really good job balancing that wry sense of humor we saw from him on the show with his drive to bring down the corrupt people behind the attacks.

I get a bad feeling about this Collins guy.  It's interesting that Chavez has a tie to him. I wonder how much the past will cloud their interaction with one another.  Chavez obviously knows that there's more to Collins than meets the eye, but does Collins realize that Joe Chavez is anything but a "yes" man?

And Goetz.  Good ol' Goetz.  He's seeming threatened by Chavez.  If I were Joe, I wouldn't turn my back.

It was good to see Eric stand up to Gray's idiocy.  I get the sense that Gray is in waaaaay over his head with this little side deal he has going on.  He's playing both sides agains the middle, and he's going to end up getting burned in the process.  I just hope that he doesn't put Jericho in danger while he's at it.  I really liked the strength that I saw in Eric when he confronted Gray.

I'm looking forward to reading more!  Thanks for sharing your story with us. :)

Author's Response:

SandraDee,

Thanks for your review.

I agree with you. I think the smallest, simplest gestures are much more meaningful. In a way, I think they indicate a level of commitment bigger than the grand gestures.

Jake does have big plans for a proposal a Heather! And I agree, that everyone will know what her answer will be!

Thanks for the compliment about how I write Hawkins. I really wished that they developed the personal side of his character more on the show and the reason why he does what he does. Jake and Hawkins definitely do make a good team. They bring different things into their friendship. In a way I think Jake, humanizes Hawkins while Hawkins helps Jake realize his own self worth.

I think you have hit Chavez's relationship on the head. I believe that Collins may realize a little too late that Chavez is anything but a 'yes' man.

Goetz definitely does see Chavez as a threat and you're right that Joe better not turn his back.

Gray is way over his head only he doesn't quite realize it. He thinks he made a great deal with RJ Land but it's going to come back and bite him.

Thanks again for the review!

Oh, there are so many things I love about this story.  This chapter was no exception. I'm going to list a few of them.

(1) Poor Heather has been through so much!  Even though Constantino was evil incarnate, it must've been dreadful for him to die in her apartment.

(2) I love that Heather is no longer shrinking away from Jake's touch.  Those two are just wonderful together.

(3) I love the Hawkins family.  I'm so glad tha tyou've chosen to make them integral to this story.

(4) The Chavez/Jake/Heather conversation was funny!

(5) Jake and Heather talking about their future children...sigh.  Just love that!

(6) The details that you've worked up for the conspiracy are just astounding.  I'm very worried for Heather because she's in such a dangerous situation and Valente is an absolute creep, but I know she's in your capable hands.

Author's Response:

SandraDee,

Thanks for your review.

Heather has been through  a lot but the problem was that she really didn't come to terms with what happened to her in New Bern. She kept it all inside trying to maintain the brave front she presented to those around her. Constantino dying in her apartment was the straw that broke the camel's back. It served as the catalyst that caused everything that had happened to her in New Bern to come bubbling to the surface. Her scrubbing the floors was her way of dealing with this.

I really enjoy writing Heather and Jake. In this chapter I think Heather finally realizes that Jake provides her a safe haven and will always be there for her.

I am having a good time writing the Hawkins family. I think their family dynamic is very intersting.

I'm glad you enjoyed the conversation between Chavez, Jake and Heather. Writing Chavez reactions (and Jake's subsequent ones) are alot of fun.

Even though Heather and Jake just got back together after so long apart. I think the experiences the went through brought them quickly brought them to the point where they both know that they can't picture a life without one another. I think the talk of children is a natural extension of this.

Thanks for compliment on the conspiracy. It's the thing I wrestle with the most ... trying to make it believable.

I'm glad you are enjoying the story and thank you again for your review!

Wonderful work as always, Skyrose!  Here are a few things I can't let go by without remarking on them:

"I have to get this out! It can't say here. Get out! Get out! Get out! It's not coming out, need more water. I have to get rid of it! I can't live with it here! Get out! Get out! Get out!"

Jake recognized it for what it was. Heather was channeling all that had happened to her into scrubbing the floor. He understood the reaction after all that she had been through and witnessing her desperation broke his heart. He just had to do something.

* * * * * * *

Poor Heather!  I really do feel for her.  I'm sure I'd be just as upset if someone was killed in front of me - even someone I truly hated.  I'm glad that Jake stepped up and took care of her.

"Listen . . .  you . . . you country bumpkin, consider this your last warning. You can't have him, he's mine! Tommy and I have an . . . an . . . understanding! Don't think you can just walk in here and steal everything that I've worked so hard to get. I won't let it happen, not now, not ever!"

I heard his first name was Thomas . . . but Tommy?!  Ewww . . . Ugh, my headache it's getting worse! I have to end this.' Heather slammed her hand on the desk and stood up to her full height.

 * * * * * * * * *

Ewww, is right!  And, as much as I don't at all see Heather as a "country bumpkin" the fact that Tara would call her one cracks me up.  I'm glad though that Heather got the upper hand in the end. :-)

"I thought I could count on you," Hawkins said flatly.

"You could," Jake replied, "until Chavez became a threat to Heather. I'm sorry, Hawkins, but this isn't going to work out."

Jake ran his hand through his hair and continued, "The bombs gave me my life back. I've got my family and someone I love to keep safe. I'm not risking them to save thousands--hell, even millions--of Americans. If I could save them without hurting Heather or my mom or my brother, I would, but it looks like I can't."

Jake turned and walked toward the door, leaving Hawkins staring at his back. He opened the door, paused for a moment and looked back at Hawkins, "I'll look out for Darcy and the kids for you..."

* * * * * * * * *

This rings very true to me.  Jake just isn't the hardened operative that Hawkins is.  I'm glad that, in the end, Jake's argument seemed to get through, and Hawkins found a way to keep the mission on track.

"Valente," Jake hissed.

Heather saw the concern in Jake's face. "Don't worry..."

Jake looked at Heather incredulously, "Not only is your boss trying to seduce you, but he wants to have someone kill you too. Of course I'm gonna worry!"

"He is not trying to seduce me." Heather said through clenched teeth, enunciating each word. She was annoyed that Jake said Valente was interested in her in front of Chavez and Hawkins.

Jake realizing his mistake, turned to Heather. "Look, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said it. But don't tell me not to worry. Of course I will. As long as you're in Cheyenne, I'm gonna worry!"

* * * * * * * * * *

I always do like protective Jake! :-)  And I have to agree with him on this one.  I think Valente's type is pretty much anyone.  He's probably more interested in Heather than he is in Tara at this point.

"Heather is coming back with you for the wedding isn't she?"

"Yeah, she'll be there."

"Well, tell her she can stay with us. It will give me a chance to get to know her."

"I was planning on it, Mom."

* * * * * * * * * *

Ah!  But what will the sleeping arrangements be? ;-)

"You know, your Dad, told me about what happened before you left for Black Jack. He said if there was anyone who could handle you it was her. He said he admired her spunk for calling you out that day."

Jake snorted and said hoarsely, "I always wondered what he thought about that whole scene. "

"Well now you know. He also told me about your reaction when Heather left for New Bern. Even if you didn't know it yet, he said, your future lay with Heather. I didn't believe him when he said it, but looks like he might have been right." Gail said then sniffled.

"Well, he was right, Mom. Absolutely. I can't even . . .  Mom, are you going to be okay?"

* * * * * * * * * *

Awww!  I love that Johnston noticed and told Gail.  It's like he can still give his stamp of approval even though he's gone.

 I just have to say, these 2 parts are too funny!

* * * * * * * *

They both became so lost in each other that they didn't hear the knock at the door, followed by the creaking of the door opening. It wasn't until Chavez cleared his throat, embarrassed that he had walked in on them, that Heather and Jake realized they were no longer alone. They quickly pulled away from each other. Heather, blushing furiously, buried her head in Jake's chest. Jake looked at Chavez with eyebrows raised, silently questioning his presence.

"Uh....yeah...right . . . uh....sorry," Chavez stammered with a bemused expression on his face, before making a hasty retreat out of the room.

As soon as the door closed, Jake started laughing.

Heather raised her head and playfully swatted Jake's chest. "That is so not funny!"

"You'd be laughing too, if you saw the look on his face when he walked in!"

* * * * * * * *

And....

* * * * * * * *

 "That bedroom? From now on, that's Heather's and Jake's room. Trust me on that. You don't want to sleep there." Chavez said to Hawkins as soon as the door was shut.

I also really like this part and the discussion that followed.  I can absolutely see Jake taking his responsibilities very seriously.  I think he always has, which may be the reason he has panicked and run in the past, because he feels his responsibilities so keenly.  But I don't think he'll be running this time. :-)

* * * * * * * *

The comment that Chavez made about the possibility of Heather being pregnant, even though he knew it wasn't possible, had affected him in an unexpected way. It made him think of the future of what lay ahead for him, Heather, and their family. It made the burden he already felt for their safety and well-being weigh more heavily on him than it ever had before.

And, finally, I thought this exchange was too cute. Though, something tells me even Jake Green's daughters will be an adventure to parent no matter how much he might hope otherwise!

* * * * * * * *

Heather finally managed to compose herself. Wiping the tears from her eyes she looked away and told him shyly, "Well, I got this picture in my mind . . . . of what our son would look like."

"Yeah?" Jake asked. He'd never really thought about having kids, until now, with Heather, and he was surprised to realize he liked the idea.

She turned her eyes back to Jake's, "Yeah. Imagine having a little Jake running around," before she started to giggle again.

 "God forbid," Jake laughed as he rolled his eyes. "We're only having girls, and they are all going to be just like you!"

"Maybe, maybe not," Heather said with a smile on her face.

Author's Response:

Marzee,

Thanks for the detailed reviewed.

Constantino's death in Heather's apartment was the last straw for her. After everything that happened to her in New Bern it was the last straw for her and everything came to the surface. In the scene with her scrubbing the floor I wanted her to seem desperate so I'm happy that the scene worked.

Tara really does feel threatened by Heather not only does she think Heather is going to usurp her place in Valente's personal life she also things that Heather is going to enroach on the power and influence she has in the office. Tara's self worth is tied into her job and her relationship with Valente. Heather definitely does not want to get involved with Valente on a personal level, the thought is just appalling to her. I like to think of Heather as a strong person who can hold her own when her integrity is brought into question and I wanted to portray that by giving her the upper hand in her interaction with Tara.

Regarding your question about the sleeping arrangements when Jake and Heather go back for Stanley's and Mimi's wedding . . . I think you probably know already!

I thought it was important that somehow Jake knew that Johnston gave him his blessing so I included the part where Johnston told Gail what he thought about the scene when Heather confronted Jake before they left for Black Jack. I think this will come up again later on in the story.

I am really enjoying writing Chavez and his reactions to Heather's and Jake's relationship. It really is alot of fun! When Chavez first met Heather he did think that he would like to get to know Heather better and was wrestling with whether or not he could make it work and still carry out his mission. His mission won out but once he saw Heather and Jake together he knew it that even if he wanted to pursue a relationship with Heather it would be a lost cause. I think that his reactions to Heather and Jake is his way of dealing with this.

Jake does take his responsibilities very seriously and like you said when they got to be too much, he just gave up and ran. You are right though, this time he won't be!

LOL! I think you are right that any daughters that Jake and Heather might have will certainly give him a run for his money!

I'm glad that you enjoyed this chapter.
